We've been away in Barmouth, West Wales, for a week's break and got chatting to people, as you do. If the subject of the book came up there was a great deal of interest and several people wanted to know about diet and supplements.

In respect to diet I emphasised the need to look after the immune system - not to overload it with foreign substances that it has to deal with, thus allowing the immune system to get on with keeping our cells in good working order to reduce the risk of or spread of cancer.

On supplements my main observation has been that they take longer to begin working than tradional (allopathic) medicines.  I think this may be that some, perhaps even most, supplements aren't medicinal - that is curative - but supportive of the curing properties of the immune system.  Also, I suspect that allopathic interventions, which are often chemical rather than biological (though some are derived from plant or animal products) act more agressively than natural supplements.  When we're in pain we want a quick fix - this is one of the main selling points for over-the-counter medicines.  That seems to be the reason why so many of us are prone to side effects when taking traditional medication.

This does not mean we should avoid allopathic remedies - far from it.  They are often essential to dealing with a situation quickly.  However, if we keep our immune systems in goot order it is likely that the conventional medication will be much more efficient at lower doses and for shorter periods with fewer side effects.   With supplements we may need to take a product for several weeks or even months before the benefits begin to show - so don't give up on natural remedies too quickly.  It was three months after taking Saw Palmetto for my enlarged prostate before I saw any results.  Now they're doing a consistently good job.  But after only a week on the sterod Doxamethasone I saw amazing results (See My Cancer Diary from 24th May to 3rd June 24).  I was able to start on a low dose and halve it.

Recommendation: (1) When offered tradition medication talk to your doctor about starting on a low dose and building up if necessary.  This may not always be possible but try always to aim for the minumum.
(2) When taking remedial supplements be patient.  The results may not appear for weeks or months.  They may not work at all, every body is different.  Be prepared to give up or take advice on alternatives.
